The sale price of a car is the part most buyers focus on. But what you actually spend over five years often dwarfs the difference between two cars on the lot.

The five cost buckets

  1. Depreciation — usually the single biggest cost, especially in years 1–3.
  2. Insurance — varies wildly by model. A Civic costs about half what a similarly-priced BMW does to insure.
  3. Fuel — 12,000 miles per year × your local gas price ÷ MPG. A 5 MPG difference adds up to thousands over 5 years.
  4. Maintenance & repairs — German cars cost 2–3× Toyotas/Hondas over the long haul.
  5. Tires & wear items — bigger wheels and AWD mean more frequent tire spend.

Before you sign, run those numbers for the car you’re considering. The cheaper sticker isn’t always the cheaper car.
